New Year's Resolutions and Prayers

“The spirit of the Lord God…has sent me to bring me good news…to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” – Isaiah 61:1-2

A New Year brings a sense of freshness, or possibilities for the future, and of discoveries yet to be made. I myself look forward to stepping into the days ahead, knowing that God will guide me into the good purposes that He has planned for me; however, I do need that extra measure of courage, strength, optimism, and faith to meet every challenge along my way.

The word that comes to mind when we make our New Years’ resolutions is “renewal.” Being a new creation in Christ means that you have been renewed. The old sinful person that we once were has gone as a result of the Lord’s grace. The way I see it, the word “renew” can be defined as changing into something new and different, something better. Some of us might struggle to remove our sinful selves and renovate our lives—it honestly is a struggle—but know this: if you stay in a steadfast relationship with God, He will continually work in your life to renew you and rid yourself of the stains of sin that may continually plague you.

I do have 2 prayers of encouragement for you guys who are determined to become new and stronger Christians this year, shining with change and “renewal.” But before that, let this year be the year we ask the Lord for spiritual growth, rather than materialistic success and shallow (temporary) physical change.

Dear Lord,
I ask that you will help make 2015 a life-changing year. Reveal Yourself to me through the Holy Book, Church, and the preaching of my wise pastors. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I realize that this journey of renewal and learning is not an easy task to accomplish.  Strengthen me as I live out my life, glorifying your name every day, In Jesus’ name, amen.

Dear God,
You have blessed me with yet another year during which to grow. You have also blessed with the opportunity to realize the potential you have placed within my life. Thank you for each of the past years, for in them you have taught me how to embrace truth and nurture love. I can’t count the number of times I’ve returned to your wellspring of wisdom to gain insight into and understanding of my life. Thank you for your guidance. Please, lead me into this year with an open heart and mind, ready to learn still more. In Jesus’ name, amen.

~praise the Lord~
